Llamas are versatile, beautiful, smart and inquisitive. They have individual personalities and will form close relationships with their handlers. Here are just a few reasons we love them!
Llamas are considered one of the easiest forms of livestock to keep. They are hardy and very healthy requiring little in the way of vetting. In fact, most health care requirements can be handled by their owners. They are suited to small or large acreage and need only minimal shelter, just enough to keep them out of the wet, cold wind, or heat. Simple fencing is generally adequate. They do require a companion though and are best kept with another llama.
The cost of keeping a llama is roughly equivalent to that of a large dog. You can keep anywhere from 4-5 adult llamas per acre.
They are hypo-allergenic which makes them an ideal pet for children with allergies. They are very clean and their manure is odourless. In addition, their manure makes a great natural fertilizer.
Llamas can be used as 4-H pets, for carting, packing, guarding and as therapy or companion animals. They can also be raised as breeding stock and as fibre producers. There fibre is wonderfully luxurious and in great demand by artisans. As an added bonus they make great lawnmowers since their low impact padded feet cause little or no damage to pasture areas.
Before you buy you should consider the following:
1. Is the animal trained to basic commands?
2. Soundness of body
3. Temperment
4. Your intended use
5. Fibre type
6. Pedigree
7. Your available time and commitment to care
Take your time and ask lots of questions!
